Abdullah The Butcher's House Of Ribs And Chinese Food
He’s Abdullah The Butcher, “The Mad Man From Sudan”, a terrifying professional wrestler that I’ve enjoyed watching ply his trade through the years. And, yes I am a closet redneck and a professional wrestling fan. How dare you claim that it is fake! I’ve been to a few live matches, although it has been many years. Long before Vince McMahon glitterized, glamorized, and otherwise ruined the sweaty sport by promoting it as just a “show”, I loved to watch Abdullah and his cohorts bash one another in the big ring. It was always promoted and developed as a battle of good and evil, with the morality lines clearly drawn. Unlike modern day so-called wrestling, one did not have to wonder who was the bad guy. Tojo Yamamoto bashed the nice guy over the head with his cane, knocking him senseless as he pinned him for the three-count. The Iron Sheik used his patented “lightning flash” to blind his hapless opponents. There were other varied weapons: heart punch, lariat, pole-axe. Thus, for some reason, I gained an affinity for the bad guys of wrestling. Even today, many years removed from my youthful love of the sport, I can name but few of the good guys. It was wrestlers like Abdullah The Butcher that caught the imagination, and drew the fans into the arenas and mesmerized wide-eyed pre-teens into being glued to the television sets.
Abdullah The Butcher was the ultimate bad guy. He was big; over 300 pounds, and obviously all was not muscle. Supposedly he was from Sudan, a moron unable even to speak. He was wide-eyed, with thick scars furrowing the length of his bald head. Invariably he was matched against some pasty and unknown white guy. As soon as the bell would ring, the savagery would begin. Usually he would immediately catch the opponent unaware with a fierce karate chop, leaving him writhing on his back. Then Abdullah would spring from the ropes, flying the mass of his huge body full force onto the semi-conscious man. He would do so repeatedly, until finally the referee would signal an end to the match, no doubt saving the little remaining life of the poor victim. Against more quality opponents, Abdullah would engage in a protracted fight, and blood would start flowing. In wrestling lingo it is known as “cutting”, where he would secretly nick his forehead to make it bleed. Please don’t be squeamish- it was all just good, wholesome entertainment. Like I said, I just loved Abdullah! That was many years ago. The guy must be 70 years old by now. In a moment of reflection and boredom, just for the sake of curiosity, I did a search on Wikipedia for Abdullah The Butcher. Lo and behold, there were several pages of information. He is from Canada, real name Larry Shreve. He is elderly, and apparently still sometimes wrestles. And of greatest interest to me, owns a restaurant in the Atlanta area. Abdullah the Butcher’s House Of Ribs And Chinese Food! Can you imagine the ambiance of such a place? From what I gather, Abdullah himself sometimes cooks the food, and often hangs out for chitchat with his guests. He is reported to be soft-spoken, intelligent, and willing to pose for photos. Sounds like a place to which I absolutely must go.
There is a group of senior adults at my church who are always willing to take a trip and enjoy a meal. They are retired and active and just like to go places. They’ve been asking me to please come up with a place to go. So, next Thursday, off we go to the aforementioned fine dining establishment. It should be fun. If I can get Larry to hold me in a headlock, I’ll post the picture in this blog. That is, if I survive the ribs and the beating. Want to join me?

Hope For A Troubled Time: The Christian Deals With The Virginia Tech Massacre
(Sermon Notes from Sunday, April 22, 2007)
SCRIPTURE READING AND INTERPRETATION
PSALM 16:1-11
Psa 16:1 A Mikhtam of David. Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in Thee.
Refuge - when life has hit you very hard, a place to go for shelter
Psa 16:2 I said to the LORD, "Thou art my Lord; I have no good besides Thee."
Psa 16:3 As for the saints who are in the earth, They are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight.
Sometimes, what happens here on earth to a person is not fair nor good
However, beyond the grave, there is God
God delights in that saint who has gone to be with Him
Psa 16:4 The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their libations of blood, Nor shall I take their names upon my lips.
Traded his soul to another god
There is the promise of multiplied sorrow
Just as the precious saint of God is promised justice from God
So the one who sells his soul to evil is promised justice
Psa 16:5 The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; Thou dost support my lot.
Psa 16:6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.
Psa 16:7 I will bless the LORD who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.
A long and sleepless night
Within that night, counsel from God has been found
Sweet instruction and peace has been gained
Now, he can sleep
Psa 16:8 I have set the LORD continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Renewed resolve
Decision to place the Lord foremost upon his mind
Result: Not shaken. Peace.
Psa 16:9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely.
Psa 16:10 For Thou wilt not abandon my soul to Sheol; Neither wilt Thou allow Thy Holy One to undergo decay.
Psa 16:11 Thou wilt make known to me the path of life; In Thy presence is fulness of joy; In Thy right hand there are pleasures forever.

QUESTIONS THAT EMERGE
(I) Why did God not intervene to prevent this matter?
Good question, fair question
Been asked throughout history
Certainly God is capable of doing so
There are times when God, indeed does intervene:
The scriptures record examples of such
Closing of Red Sea upon armies of Pharaoh
Shutting of lion's mouth with Daniel
Sovereignty and mystery to God
You cannot make a rule of thumb as to how He is going to behave
Freedom is a magnificent, but also terrible, gift from God to man
It must be there, for us to choose to love and serve Him
Was given to Adam & Even within the Garden
Why did God not step in to prevent the eating of the forbidden fruit?
Knew there would be terrible consequences to that act?
With a spiritually and morally capable person:
Can instruct, can encourage, can punish
Out of respect for this person's freedom as an individual
Really, out of love for this person, you cannot force compliance to what you know he/she should do
Cannot have the freedom to do good, and yet not the freedom to do evil
Eve ate of the forbidden fruit
Cain slew Abel
Rich Young Ruler walked away from Jesus
People crucified Jesus
(II) Where was God while this was happening?
God has chosen that His primary way to work is through His people
Liviu Lebrescu,
professor and elderly immigrant from Russia
Holocaust survivor
Blocked the door so his students could escape
Shot and killed
Trey Perkins, Derek O’Dell and Katelyn Carney held a door closed.
Waleed Shaalan, from Egypt, are calling him a hero. Friends have told this news station in Virginia that Waleed distracted shooter Seung Hui-Cho, so that three of his friends could to escape the shooting.
Wherever you see an act of selfless, sacrificial love, there you see God
(III) Was, is, this man responsible for his actions?
Life can be hard
We do not all enter life with the same privilege
Some to wealth, some to poverty
Some to good parents, some are abused
Some with healthy minds, some with mental illness
Difficulty with relationships
Born in poverty, problem with wealthy people
O.K. So you have some problems
You make a moral choice what to do with those problems
Allow them to be a motivation for change and personal growth
Or, motivation to bitterness and violence
Weak thing, the evil thing, is to take your problems out on others
Young lady whose father had a difficult childhood, unhappy, abused his daughter
If you are in an abusive relationship
I have three things to tell you:
It's not your fault
You deserve better
Get out!
(IV) Can someone like Cho be reached with the love of God and transformed by the gospel?
I'd like to think, "Yes"
I do not know details, but I think in hindsight that Christians could have done more
Teacher, parent, schoolmate could have tried to befriend
Looked at as someone beyond surface impressions
Admittedly, not a very attractive person
But made in the image of God, worthy of being loved
Power of Jesus Christ to fundamentally transform a person
Could have found friendship, acceptance, purpose in Jesus
Stewardship of relationships
If...
those in personal connection had known what this man would one day do...
Perhaps tried harder
Been more earnest in pursuing a connection
Invited to campus Christian fellowship
Put on a prayer list
Insight into the "church"
There are some "less than perfect" personalities connected to the institutional church
In my twenty something years of ministry
Personality flaws that would not be accepted in other organizations
Person of the world would look and say, "Yeah, look at the church, hypocrites"
It's true
But, people with problems are naturally drawn to Jesus and to the church
I think it is a testimony to the church that we are made up of people with problems
So you look at Old Ms. Meany
Isn't she a piece of work
True
She has some genuine flaws, readily recognizable
But think what she would have been, without Jesus!
(V) What can I do, here at Mt. Tabor, in response to this?
Pray
Take very seriously my responsibility to be salt and light-
you may be a vessel used of God to bring about change in a man like Cho, you may help to bring about salvation for someone that tomorrow will go to meet his God.
Live and love as if today is all I have.
Trust that God is in control.
Trust that God loves you.
Trust that your eternity is secure because of God's love for you.
Refuse to let life make you bitter.
You do not want to become like Cho.
You and I do not have to give any other human being, including a person like Cho, the power to control our lives.

Those Pesky Little Creatures Of God
Here they have built a nest, and babies are chattering like crazy, in the corner of the front veranda of our church sanctuary. They have made a big mess and continue to make a lot of noise. So, what to do….what to do…. A high pressure sprayer would certainly do the trick. And, we’ve one available. Would anyone protest? Our cat, Scooter, has proven in the past to be quite effective with the elimination of birds. He would bring them to the door for show, and then torture them to death, or at least until my wife could stand it no longer and put an end to the ordeal. But Scooter is now old and fat, mostly interested in food and sleep, like some people I know. But with a little help from a step ladder and a friendly master, perhaps his carnal instincts could be revived. Would anyone protest?
I suspect the bird family is safe, having chosen a good place to settle and raise the kids.
The secretary has a bullfrog problem. (actual bullfrog here)
Often she speaks with energy concerning her pond in the backyard. It has been lovingly built and tended, the home of pretty flowers and fish. But now all but two of the wriggly little creatures are gone, down the gullet of a big bullfrog. And the fellow makes a lot of noise at night, disturbing the tranquility and perhaps the work production of our church employee. What to do…what to do… She and her husband intend to catch and transfer his residence to the community lake. But so far he has escaped all efforts. Now I remember how to catch frogs. I learned the art as a kid. You have to do it at night. You arm yourself with a flashlight and a pole with fork tightly tied to the end. And I guess the reader can surmise the rest of the story. It works. But I don’t think she is interested in personally employing the procedure. Too bad; I like frog legs. Would anyone protest?
It is springtime around here. Birds are singing and frogs are croaking, and sometimes when the traffic dies down you can actually hear them. It’s time for our annual visit of The Big Black Snake.
(not the actual snake)
He crawls across the front yard and disappears somewhere around the garage. I’m pretty sure one time he crawled into the storage building. It is dark in there, and there are probably lots of mice and things to satisfy a hungry snake. So really he is helping with pest elimination. I tell my wife he is just a harmless black snake, four feet long and as big around as my arm. Would anyone protest?
She never enters the storage building. It’s a good place to keep my pressure sprayer, and frog gig, and to hang out when a little privacy is needed. Just me and the snake.

Sometimes Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot
I have been listening to Rush for quite some time. In small doses, mind you, because a little goes a long way. I first became familiar with him in my mid-20's, while living in Kansas City. My home was about an hour from Seminary, and I determined that talk radio would be a bit more beneficial than country music. It was upsetting when our local host was replaced by a syndicated guy from Sacramento, California. But after a few shows, he became acceptable and even enjoyable.
I give Rush Limbaugh credit for bringing political conservatism "out of the closet". Popular media had pretty much succeeded in selling the message that true social intelligence and correct political thought was the exclusive property of liberalism. Nixon tapped into the "silent majority" of the conservative heart of America. But it was Limbaugh and Reagan who brought such to the forefront, daring the conservative to step up and look the high-brow liberal in the eye. And it became a winning formula. In my opinion, the recent resurgence of liberal politicians is not a judgment of true conservatism, but a willingness on the part of Americans to repudiate the conservatives-in-name-onl y that have wrecked our economy with record spending and bumbled us along in a protracted war. But, back to Rush Limbaugh....
What makes him so popular? I know he is lampooned as a fat buffoon by the media. But, let's be honest, about 25 million people per week tune in to his radio show. And, contrary to the opinion of liberal elitism, they're not all stupid. Limbaugh is a compelling spokesperson for conservatism. He says well what conservatives think. He treat his callers with respect. He makes a convincing argument, and he does so with passion. If you listen to the guy, you are liable to start agreeing with him.
Now I am a public speaker, yet I recognize there can be a profound weakness with communicating about great truths with the spoken word. Some matters are just too complicated, too nuanced to be summarized and concluded through a few spoken sentences. Yet an accomplished orator will sometimes try to do exactly that. Thus we give a five minute spiel, and ask people to turn over their hearts and lives to Jesus Christ. It seems to me the matter of eternal life and soul commitment is worth a bit more consideration. It is true that Jesus confronted his disciples, like Peter and Matthew, with the demand, "Follow Me." and they immediately left all to become His disciples. But I believe with much conviction that such a final calling was preceeded with many lessons and discussions. Jesus had too much respect for the freedom of personal choice to manipulate others into conversion through the power of a few words. Yet, I have to admit, a preacher can choose to be unethical by using oratory skills to play upon hearts and emotions and predispositions.
Limbaugh readily admits that he is foremost an entertainer and businessman. His goal is to make money by building and keeping a large audience. There is nothing wrong with that. But it does give cause to wonder. Why did he say that? Does he really believe it? Is it as important to him as he leads me to believe? I think he is simply putting on a good show. He is not trying to change the world or preach a gospel. He's trying to make a lot of money, and I am the customer.
Yesterday I heard him waxing eloquently about the needlessness of aerobic exercise. He was quoting a new book. As I listened to the five minute blurb, it all sounded good and made perfect sense. And after I turned off the radio, I began to consider. For 100 days now, I have been faithfully committed to a regimen of aerobic exercise, healthy eating, and weight lifting. It has proven to be successful. Am I to allow a five-minute presentation by a radio entertainer to persuade me otherwise? His words were confident, convincing, with absolute authority. He basically was trying to convert me with a five minute presentation of his gospel. So, I went home and spent some time studying the matter. I'll not go into the details. But, after some time in research and consideration, I've determined that Rush Limbaugh is absolutely wrong in this matter. Cardio exercise is an essential ingredient to maintaining good health. And, besides, who is this guy to proclaim himself an authority on matters of health and exercise?
Life impact issues of religion, politics, and health cannot be finalized by a five-minute blurb on the radio. Even if the spokesperson proclaims self to be the Almighty. And now I have a three-mile powerwalk to take. What's the likelihood of me listening to Rush along the way?

Thoughts About "The Pursuit Of Happyness"
I watched The Pursuit of Happyness tonight and will pass along some impressions.
It is one of the best movies I have seen in quite some time. No doubt many viewers will lose interest because it is admittedly a slow film and it is not action packed. There are no sexual escapades or violence and very little profanity. It is a simple story about a man's love for his son and determination to achieve a dream. And, my what a dreamer! He sells bone-density readers that no one wants to buy. He pursues a career as a stock broker with a prestigious firm, even without adequate background or training. Along the way his wife leaves, and he and his son become homeless. Yet he perseveres. And, against all odds, he wins. I'd say, "What a fanciful story". But I understand it is true. Thus it moves beyond entertainment to inspiration.
I'll allow myself to become gripped emotionally by a good film. But it is not easy. Last night I came home to find my wife watching this movie. It was near the end, and there were tears in her eyes. I said nothing, lest I incur the flip-side of her tender heart. And now tonight I viewed the same movie. I watched as the hero, a dad with a stubborn dream, continued to persevere through impossible odds. He and his little boy slept on the street and stayed at homeless shelters. Life was so very tough- nothing was easy, or quick. But the two never became embittered. And the dad kept believing in himself, even when no one else did. And, in the end....Well, you will have to watch the movie. It's worth every minute of your time. You will probably find yourself crying like my wife, and like myself. And if you have a problem with this guy crying over a silly movie, just send me your address and I'll show up tomorrow morning to break your kneecap (in a Christian kind of way, of course).
It's one of the best.

A Fine And Busy Easter 2007
At 5:00 a.m. K and I pulled from the driveway headed for our traditional climb of Stone Mountain for Easter Sunrise Services. This morning we were promised to be greeted with 17 degrees and icy winds, and the forecast proved to be true. We were joined by a couple of hearty/crazy friends. For the first time, the climb seemed rather easy, which made me feel good about the personal conditioning of the last 3 months. The crowd at the top was sparse compared to previous years. And such is an encouragement about the continued preservation of the human species; most people seem to have better sense than myself. The service was inspiring, and gratefully brief.
And the view was spectacular. Here is a photo of the sun beginning to rise on Easter Sunday.
The church was packed for Sunday services which is an affirmation of what is, to me, the most important date of the Christian calendar.
Here's a pretty young lady, in her new Easter dress, standing with her mom. The family is originally from Quebec. We have had fun becoming good friends and enjoying the differences of our cultures.

Here's a glowing mother-to-be, excited not only about the worship but also the days ahead. She and her husband moved to the other side of the county, a long drive away, but I am pleased they have continued to come to our church. They are going to be great parents, and I cannot wait for the dedication service for the new little one.
After church, our family gathered for a great meal. Debbie really outdid herself with the cooking and I with the eating. And I took Skylar out back for an Easter Egg Hunt.
They were telling me she was too little, but this was for my pleasure even more than hers. I think she looks fine in her Easter outfit. But she does not want to give back the eggs.
Later in the afternoon we went for family portraits. Last year, for family pictures, my face was sunburned from cutting the grass the day before. This year is was windburned from the crazy jouney up a mountain in freezing weather. Nevertheless, portraits were made, and I'll share a few.
Here's the gang, and the first family portrait with our newest addition.

A mug I'll soon be marketing.
Krystal. She's the hearty soul who motivates me to climb mountains. She will graduate from college next year.
Heres my son, B. Fine young man. He likes to laugh at my pictures, but thinks his is great. I'll not argue at his insight concerning either.
The day ended with a cookout at the home of some friends. They are quite gracious, and a good time was had by all. I played ball with the little boys. And, slept soundly last night.
I do enjoy Easter!

The Spiritual Dynamics Of Colon Cleansing
I've been on a health kick since January 2nd, when I found myself fifty years old and fifty pounds overweight. It started with a diet and evolved from there. A few weeks later, healthy eating became a resolve. There was a marked reduction of processed sugar, between meal snacks, and going out to eat. And of course there first seemed an accompanying reduction in the "fun factor" of life, but that's the price one pays to live another year. About a month into the process I began to exercise. It started with exercise items easily and economically obtained. First was a set of resistance tubes which seemed to work quite well. I also got one of these huge inflatable balls and accompanying exercise video. But I felt kind of stupid trying to follow along with all of these skinny and beautiful women, and the male ego in me decided this must be a "chick thing", so the ball has been deflated and will soon find its way to e-bay. I settled upon exercise with a Total Gym, figuring if it was good enough for Christy Brinkley and Chuck Norris, then it would work for me. I bought mine locally from craigslist, and it has worked well. I do the weight training in the mornings and a brisk power-walk in the evenings, and I want to emphasize with all sincerity that the last three months have been really good for me both physically and emotionally. Energy and strength has increased, and I feel my mind has sharpened- Lord knows such was needed. And there is a more positive outlook- maybe it's the endorphins, or perhaps the compliments from others, or just feeling good about taking action to meet a personal need. But I encourage you to join me with a renewed commitment to personal health- life is short, it should be experienced to fullest possible, and we really should take care of ourselves.
And, so I come to the subject of colon cleansing.
Somewhere I heard the average person has five pounds of undigested red meat in his colon. (The "expert" source was, much later, found to be Detective Rosewood of Beverly Hills Cop) That's pretty sick. And I know for a fact, since an ongoing part of my job is to connect with those who are struggling with health problems, that a lot of Americans have digestive and colon problems which most likely are related to personal lifestyle choices. So, turning fifty years of age and awakened to the need for good health, this supposed factoid about red meat popped into my mind. Five pounds of junk, just hanging around in my body? That can't be good. So I got to checking around for an internal cleansing product that would be healthy to use. And I will tell you that the internet is full of ads for products of a dubious nature. I would say to be very careful about digesting stuff that you order from the internet; I don't want to put into my body something Joe Blow manufactures in his basement.
My wife, Deb, sells supplements and vitamins for a living. She expects me to pop about twenty "natural pills" per day. At one time I protested such regimin, but now it is simply part of the routine. She was excited when I asked her to find me a safe product for my newest venture in health. She came home with Total Body Rapid Cleanse, "A Complete 7 Day Internal Cleansing". It is interesting stuff, purporting to detoxify liver and organs, provide natural fiber, and bring about a deep colon cleansing. This is my fifth day. It is certainly providing more exercise, inducing frequent trips to the "meditation room" at assorted hours of the day and night. One thing I find interesting about the product is the accompanying video by Dr. Brenda Watson, founder and president of the company. It is certainly inspirational to watch someone speak with such energy, sparkly eyes, and a wide smile about intestinal elimination. Truly this woman could sell anything.
Well, if you have read this far- highly unlikely- then I might as well throw in another thought. What would Jesus think about colon cleansing? I'll bet you have never heard a sermon on the subject. It is probably blasphemous to many for me to make the point, but Jesus had a natural body. He probably had a diet that was a bit more healthy than we ingest today, and did not deal with as many of the digestive complications that we face. As far as I know no one in the Bible ever did a colon cleansing, although I will defer to the scholars of the SBC for the final word on the subject. But Jesus did fast, which is no doubt a wonderful cleansing experience for the body. And we are instructed that our body is to be turned over to God as "a living sacrifice". "You are not your own; you are bought with a price. Therefore glorify God with your body..." So, we should take care of our bodies. Doing all we can, to facilitate good personal health, is a matter of spiritual as well as physical exertion. It is a crude, but I think true, philosophy that I have heard many times: "We do not have a whole lot to say about the hand that we are dealt in life. But what we choose to do with it is our personal responsibility." Makes sense to me. Let's take care of ourselves.
This will not be the subject of Sunday's sermon.

Visitor In The Night
I was settled in for the evening, around 9 p.m., when the phone rang. It was my daughter K and she was quite upset. She was speaking so quickly and fearfully that her story was hard to discern, so I had to ask her to slow down a bit. She had put Skylar, my one-year-old grandaughter to bed. And she was in the shower when she heard the sound. No one else was supposed to be in the apartment, but she heard sounds coming from the living room. Several of the baby's toys had been left in the floor, and as K was in the bathroom, she could clearly hear one of them squeeking. It sounded as if someone had stepped upon the toy. She was petrified, and I was trying to calm her. Is it not possible that the battery is going dead in one of the toys? Such sometimes causes a toy to kick on-and-off randomly. And even as I was trying to explain, she let out a scream- "Oh no. A different toy is ringing...a toy phone!" I had to agree that such was strange. "Call 911 right away" I urged. Then the phone went dead.
My wife and I jumped into the car and drove the five minutes over to her apartment. When we arrived, there were already three police cars in the parking lot, with lights blaring. We rushed to the door, to find K and Skylar all right. The officers had checked the house thoroughly. No one was inside, and there were no signs of forced entry. I looked around at the various toys scattered across the living room floor, and surmised that indeed some of them were ready for new batteries. It seems it was a false alarm.
I walked to the door with the officer. He was friendly, and quite talkative. I thanked him for such prompt service. And, before he left, he hesitated, and then spoke. "I answered a call to this very same apartment, about a year ago."
"What happened?" I asked.
"It was tragic. A little boy died. We tried to resuscitate him, but it was too late.... Interesting... he was playing with his toys in that very same floor..."
