Shakespeare, Cindy Sheehan, & Jesus Christ
A few quotations that have caused me to stop and think:
“The easiest person to deceive is one's self.”
- - - Edward George Bulwer-Lytton "The Disowned" 1828
“When my love swears that she is made of truth,
I do believe her,
Though I know she lies.” – Shakespeare
Sometimes our problem with the truth is that we do not want to make a search. We become comfortable and happy with half-truths and even lies. The search is difficult. It takes time. And, the search is dangerous, because we are challenged to be open with what we find. Oftentimes I would rather fortify what I currently believe than be open to the truth when it may change what I believe. This is true for the Christian and the Atheist. Right?
-------------------------
“It is sad when a person has a head like a doorknob- anybody can turn it.” – Anon
Perhaps this is referring to the husband or boyfriend who tends to let his eyes wander? I remember one time my wife said, “I noticed you looking, and boy is that going to cost you.” I think it also refers to the individual who has little grounding in who he is or what he believes. Sometimes these folk wander into the church to stay around for a few weeks, only to take off and never be seen again. I generally respect someone who is “checking out” the Christian message. For some it is but the latest fad in an ongoing lifestyle. Jesus admonishes us to “count the costs” before making a commitment to a task. He also teaches that we must put our hands to the plow and keep moving forward. I understand Christianity not to be a hobby, but to be the great commitment of life.
-----------------------
“You sound more informed than most U.S. Congress-people, so maybe you should run (for Congress).” – Hardball host Chris Matthews commenting to Cindy Sheehan
“Since her first meeting with the president, she has called him a ‘lying bastard,’ ‘filth-spewer,’ ‘evil maniac,’ ‘fuehrer’ and the world’s ‘biggest terrorist’ who is committing ‘blatant genocide’ and ‘waging a nuclear war’ in Iraq…Sheehan is symptomatic of something that in 2008 could cause the Democratic Party a sixth loss in eight presidential elections. That something is a shrillness unlike anything heard, in living memory, from a major tendency within a major party.” – Columnist George Will
When must someone, who is grieving and angry, become accountable for her words and actions? One has a right to grieve. Does that same person have a right to defame another with a personal vendetta and unrelenting mean spirit? Somewhere along the way character must take hold. Perhaps, with Ms. Sheehan, she is revealing a lack of character. I wonder if the grief is no longer her motivating factor. Maybe she is being sadly manipulated, or maybe she is drunk with the notoriety. I just know she makes me to feel sorry for her. Thus, she seems to be in the saddest of position in life.

Um, Dave, a couple of things... have you heard the quotes Bushy has said about her? Check it out.
Plus, if you take the roughest things anyone says over the course of a couple fo months and condense them into a sound bite, (and out of context), it'll always sound like that. Bet I could do the same thing to you. I KNOW you could do it to me.
Remember, with all due respect to George Will, he too has an agenda. He's no unbiased observer making a general point. He's making statements like that to solidify the Republican base who, like him, think what's going on over there is justified and smart.
Remember the Swift Boat guys?
I'm not all that impressed with Cindy Sheehan's speaking abilities, and she's made some dumb statements, but I'd guess less the two percent as many as George Bush has since he became president.
See, the real problem is, that many people who OUGHT to be holding this foolish administration accountable for their lies are apologists - simply because the President is a member of their political party.
I can only imagine what would have happened if Bill Clinton had pulled this kind of crap.
Supporters of this war, in my mind, are either foolish or naive, along with being about as shortsighted as is possible.
Our children will not only be paying for this administration's wastfulness, but will also be paying, some with their lives in terror attacks, for the creation of so many more "America haters" than ever existed before.
God forgive us.

Pass along to me some of these quotes from Bush. I'm sure some harsh things are being said, but not from him personally.
The moment this lady steps into the public arena with her attacks, she loses her amnesty from being criticized because she lost a son in the war. When I watch her on television, or even read her comments, she seems obviously overmatched. I think she is being manupulated by the anti-war movement.
Now, debating the justice of the War In Iraq is another matter. Do you have a post on such issue upon which I can comment?

I like that one. I didn't really look at it as your first example explained, but more like, how people can be so quick to change their minds, question their strongest beliefs, whatever they may be. You just don't get the impression somebody is strong if they can be swayed by any little thing.

I think neither extreme is proper. Phases in my life have found me too stubborn and unwilling to change. But it should take more than a soundbite or a seemingly attractive argument to change a valued position.

Thanks.
Sometimes I just feel I need to post something. I collect posts for sermons and rainy days. I'll try not to resort to this very often.

Sorry I just read this response... Didn't get it in my comments. I'll get some of the quotes from Bush about Cindy Sheehan. I'll take out the expletives. I've written a bunch of posts on the war but I haven't written many lately. Worn out perhaps... I'll tmail you a couple later tonight long with some quotes.
