Top 50 Movies All-Time

TOP 50 MOVIES ALL-TIME

Yahoo shares with us this list:
http://movies.yahoo.com/mvc/top10?lid=1" title="http://movies.yahoo.com/mvc/top10?lid=1" target="_blank"http://movies.yahoo.com/mvc/t...

I've seen 38 of these movies.  I'd like for you to check it out, and let me know how many you have seen.  I have always enjoyed a good film, and believe a quality movie both entertains and makes a social statement- with all but the very best leaning more heavily in one direction than the other.

This list is obviously subjective.  Where is Rocky, Citizen Kane, African Queen, or even Passion Of The Christ?  And some would be asking where is The Da Vinci Code (not me!).

Here are some quick thoughts about the movies in the list:
*Shawshank is a good movie, but top-ranked of all time is suspect.  Maybe it is just my dislike of the politics of Tim Robbins.

*I've seen 17 of the top 20.  “All About Eve” would probably be good, with the devillishly evil and fun Bette Davis.  I know I really should see “Schindler's List”, but I'm sure it is such a long and grim movie.  And, “The Usual Suspects” (#19), you've got to be kidding.

*Movies I will probably never see: “Batman Begins” - yuk.  “The Notebook” - love story, tear-jerker, am I right? “Million Dollar Baby” - please convince me to be interested.

*For a movie with a complicated and worthwhile message, requiring that you view it more than one time, I vote for “Crash”.  It is a significant film.

*My five favorite from the list.  Hmmm..., here goes, in no particular order: Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan, Crash, To Kill A Mocking Bird, Lion King

How many have you seen?
What is left out?
Your five favorites?

Wow, I've seen 48 of those. And I have all 48 in my DVD collection....I need to run out and get the other 2!

Sometimes you are too weird for words...lol. Does any movie with Charleston Heston or Ronald Reagan automatically get moved up?

Now I'll check the list...

You have seen 48? I was sure that no one would comment who has seen more than me! 48! So, tell me please, what are the 2 you have not seen?

I've missed about ten by my count, most noteably the Lord of the Rings stuff and American History X. Funny, the last list like this I saw on-line had 50 I'd seen. This list has newer movies. I have to catch up.

My favorite five off the top of my head....

Parenthood
Defending Your Life
Magnolia
To Kill a Mockingbird
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
In the Heat of the Night (the movie... not the TV series...)
Elmer Gantry
All the President's Men

That's more than five huh? Oh well. I could keep going.

Weird. Now what is weird? I'm just doing a banal little post about popular movies, and seeking to broaden my horizon with artwork and film. You know, a renaissance man! Anyhow, Ronald Reagan was a bad actor although a great president, and I'd have voted for Heston in a heartbeat.

Weird...hah!

Sorry, but that list of top 50 movies sucks - no mention of Citizen Kane, Psycho, Gone with the Wind, Streetcar Named Desire, Easy Rider, Jaws, Intolerance?????? But "Toy Story" made it? Oh spare me!!! 90% of the movies listed in that compilation were filmed in the past 10 years....

Go to AMPAS website and take a look at their top 100 movies of all time. Now THAT"s a list.

Signed,
A Film Minor

Where is seven, spirited away, serenity and memento ? ESotSM isnt there either.. but office space, huh ?! On my personal list I would always put "The Apartment", "hana bi" and "fight club" (first movie to genuine suprise me). As much as one could say about this one, everybody has his own list. I bet your own list wouldnt have many positions which would strike my fancy, and mine favorites wouldnt be interesting for you (eg Akira ). There's no accounting for taste.

A film minor? Now that is interesting....

You're probably right- no doubt there is a better list out there. I think this list is voted by their online participants, as evidenced by a few really strange entries. But it is good for discussion.

I'll check out AMPAS.

I watch a lot of movies, and I am not familiar with most of the ones on your list, other than Fight Club. That just means you prably have a much higher taste in movies.

That's not fair- you are listing movies not on the list.

Elmer Gantry. I must have seen that one 40 years ago. As I recall, it does not give a positive portrayal of a preacher. And, probably, it is realistic of some situations.

i've seen 40.5

this list is bunk, though. no bearing on movie-excellence making whatsoever.

cinderella man? finding nemo? shawshank at #1? sweet happy moses.

I've seen 46 of the 50. I find the list ridiculous. The Notebook? Give me a break! It's too heavily weighted with more recent films at the expense of many true classics.

Nah. its just means we got different tastes(gramaticaly correct?). But If you pick someday "spirited away" or "my neigbor totoro" you would be probably pleasantly suprised.

I've seen about half of these. You really should see The Notebook though. Even my boyfriend likes it. Too many newer movies on here though. The average film viewer in this seems to not know a good movie when they see it due to the lack of classics. Psyco at 50?! Come on! That was such a ground breaking film!

You have stirred my interest in seeing Elmer Gantry, a film I had forgotten. As I remember, it is a scathing rebuke of revivalism and fundamentalism, and would probably be quite applicable to much of the religious scene of today. I am so interested I am probably going to try to find the film on Amazon and buy it.

Or if you have it, I'll drop by sometime this week and watch it.

Oh, taboo, we miss your ongoing interaction here on t-blog. And you are right, this list has little to do with excellence in craftsmanship; just a snapshot of the interests of those participating in the ongoing Yahoo survey.

Gotta see the notebook? Why? I would like for a guy to tell me, without prompting from a female, that he has seen and liked this movie. I predict it will not happen.

Hitchcock has made some great films, and I've always enjoyed them. I've rented a few and tried to get my teenagers to enjoy them, but the films are just too slow for their viewing pleasures. Too bad!

The Notebook? Another recommendation exclusively from a female. Are there really any guys who will truly tell me they liked this movie? I'll bet your boyfriend is just telling you this to impress you, while deep inside he wretched at the syrupy love-scene of a movie!

Definately a rebuke of charletons, but not preachers per sey. Well, maybe Baptist preachers from... oh damn, I can't remember how to spell your county's name.

Wow! all these comments, 'Psycho' I saw as a kid and that is some time ago and wouldn't see it again. Think I will put down a few of what I have seen. Especially when I was a kid, let alone grownup adult. What about musicals, Grease, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppin, etc. We all have different tastes, don't we? from men that is.

I've seen The Notebook and I'm sorry, it doesn't justify a position in the top 50, let alone the top 1,000 movies OF ALL TIME. There are just too many better films.

What an interesting mix! Seems you have a thing for violent flicks, and then you throw in some real creampuffs. You're not a serial killer, are you? (Just kidding. Don't come looking for me.)

Butterfly Effect a nice and thought-provoking movie.

Vanilla Sky? I don't think so!

Thank you, thank you, for the negative opinion of Notebook. Now my teenage daughters tell me it is a great flick. More reason to be suspect!
