Convictions

Convictions About Mel
Today I went to see Apocalypto. It is an entertaining movie, with a significant message, and I will pass along some insights in a future post. I know some people who will not see this film because they feel Mel Gibson is a racist. So they make a concrete statement of their displeasure by refusing to invest their money in his art. Now I could debate about whether Gibson indeed is a racist, or an alcoholic who tends to run his mouth when he is drunk. But I respect that my friends are willing to take concrete action in expressing a social/moral/religious conviction.

From The Heart
I believe we need to have clarity of convinction. The old saying is, "When you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything." Of course the challenge is to know what convinctions are best to hold. Some people expend a great deal of energy seeking to behave according to the most socially acceptable convictions. To me, that is a weak way to go about life. More admiral to me is the person willing to do the hard work of developing personal boundaries. To this person, life is not about what feels good, or what is popular, or what is easy, but what is right. He wrestles with the issues. He may listen and consider what others believe, but will not accept any opinion of another as the final word. Instead, he will put sweat into seeking the ultimate answers in these matters. He will study, reason, pray, and seek in the mystical encounters of life a clarity about issues. Such is far from the easy ways of going through life doing what feels good (hedonism) or what someone else tells you (fundamentalism).

So, even though I do not share the conviction, I respect my friend who will not go to a Gibson movie.

Sampling Of Personal Convictions
This causes me to think about personal convictions I have formed, that reveal themselves in concrete actions.
Here's a quick and random sampling:
*I abstain from alcoholic beverages.
*I will view and read nothing produced by Michael Moore.
*I will meet the basic needs of my family.
*I refuse to shop at Walmart.
*I save the lives of worms stranded on the pavement after heavy rains (now, that's a silly one, I know!).
*I believe every person on earth would benefit from a personal love-relationship with Jesus Christ.
*I refused to vote for any incumbents in the last election and may do so again.
*Generally I will help out a begger
*I will be faithful to my wife.

Obviously these are not all of the same value to me or to my surrounding world. Some are of minor import. Some I believe I would be willing to die for.

How About You?
Would you share with me a couple of convictions in your life? Perhaps one that is minor, and one that is major.

* I will raise my daughter in a loving, positive and supportive environment.
* I don't view/listen to media that will scar my psyche.
* I will always be the friend that my friends feel they can tell something to and not be judged.

This was a cool post because it made me think about what's valuable to me. We go through life knowing what's important to us, but it was a bit difficult for me to put it into words.

It's great to see the convictions we share and those we don't.... I, too, refuse to shop at WalMart (or Sam's Club).

Big one:
* I will do whatever is in my power to raise my children to know that they are smart, strong, and beloved.

* I will be a faithful wife to my husband (if an occasional nag).

Little ones:
* I will clip coupons every week, whether I end up using them or not.

* I will set the trip odometer on my car every time I fill up the tank.

* I will sing until I die.

I have found a common attitude in people of my generation, and yes, even me is that of complete apathy. Why should we take a stand for or against anything? Nothing ever changes.
We just want something to believe in.

I will never make my step-children feel like step-children.
I always smile and thank my mail lady when I see her (that's my small one)

One I need to work on is being a more genorous and happy giver. I think after being completely strapped for so many years, it makes me scared to part with my money. It's not that I don't give charitable donations at all, it's just that I could give more.

Oy... you will read or see nothing produced by Michael Moore? Come on... How moronic is that Dave. How do you form you opinions of the guy? Based on stuff Rush Limbaugh says? You've "decided" he cannot possibly speak truth? Ever? Please.

I guess his silly allegation of a connection between the families of George Bush and Osama bin Laden, in Farenheit 9/11, would be reason enough to label this guy a looney, far from reasonable. To me he is the face of the Hollywood left, and so I really do not like him and would not respect anything he would be connected with. I know it's unfair, but surely there are politicians and fabricators out there toward whom you share similar feelings.

I know the cheap prices at Walmart come because of child labor in Asia. I know that Walmart destroys Mom and Pop businesses. I know that Walmart sucks tax concessions out of communities, and then is likely to move on rather than fulfull their end of such a bargain. I know that Walmart abuses its employees. But, most irritating to me, the shopping experience at one of their mega-centers is most unpleasurable. I'd rather pay double just to avoid walking into their doorway.

Apathy? What a most sad human condition. It's easy to buy into it, especially around middle age when you come to understand that most likely you will not change the world. But, I say, why stop trying and believing? Apathy makes you fat, lazy, and dead.

You make sense. Here on t-blog some will not give my writing a consideration simply because of a personal prejudice. That I consider to be unfair. And you are saying that I am being similarly unfair. Does this mean I have to read/watch something by Michael Moore? Please say no!

And if you have to feed your daughter on $25 for a week, that is a tough task. You can probably find a cheaper place for groceries than Walmart. We shop at Aldi, a British chain with their own brands, and very cheap.

So you saw the movie? What he said... that was TRUE, was that George Senior was eating breakfast the morning of 9-11 with relatives of Osama, and had business dealings with them for decades. He also said that rlatives of Bin Laden financed GWB's first business venture... I know, I know... way out there... Absolutely TRUE, mind you, but far too much to accept without plenty of documentation... of which, of course, there is plenty, since it's public information. About the only assertions he made that were proved to be false (which he publicly corrected as soon as he found out he was in error - compare that to your president) were extremely minor points... "To me he is the face of the Hollywood left, and so I really do not like him and would not respect anything he would be connected with." Uh huh. He still lives in Flint, Michigan. Andf I'll bet you've never really watched anything he's done, which means your opinion is based on that of others who have an axe to grind... Afraid of seeing something that might change your mind about some things? Real fair.

I never end a conversation or leave the company of a loved one without telling them that I love them. Some would say that those three words loose their meaning when repeated so often, I would disagree--I mean them from the bottom of my heart and would never want one of my children, husband or family members to leave this place without knowing that I love them.

So Dave, you are saying there isn't one. Is that right? I'm just curious. And, of course, I'd be curious where you get your information that there isn't. Who told you so? And have you researched it? Or does the idea bother you so much that you'd ignore it even in the face of simple fact?

Please don't ignore this. I'm really curious.

Thanks.
I've been thinking about your challenge about Moore. On the surface, his inferences about Bush and bin Laden are indeed farfetched, and seem to deserve dismissal offhand. There are so many strange claims and theories out there, and I could not give them all earnest study if I had a mind to. Who know- UFO's may be for real, and the same with the Loch Ness Monster and the Faulk Creek Monster for that matter. The earth may be shaped like a donut, with a primevil world existing in the middle. But I doubt such theories so much I have little desire to study them.
But, I'm the one who took it upon himself to belittle Moore. You challenged me. So, I'm thinking about viewing his film, Farenheit 9/11. It seems, I remember, the Republicans came out with a rebuttal film that generated some press also.
Several weeks ago you ran, on your blog, a piece by Moore encouraging a full withdrawal from Iraq. I'll admit I did not read it simply because of the author. So, gotta go back and read it now. It's highly unlikely I'll agree with what the guy has to say, but I'll try to at least listen/read.

I watched the rebuttal film. The "gotcha's" tended to be in the nature of "See? He didn't steal $50,000 like Moore said... (it was $49,500.)

He's an easy guy to do that to since he's painting with a broad brush and very definately trying to make a point. But most of the complaints were very similar to the ones made by early Sixty Minutes targets who complained that the parts of the interview that showed them being nice to their wives and kids ended up on the cutting room floor, and all Sixty Minutes showed was them ripping off the Government, or the little old ladies or whatever; and I suppose that if you're the type of person who thinks, for instance, that because that show has gotten some facts wrong over 35 years, it means that the whole bunch of them are, by and large, crappy journalists and that all their stories are bunk, then you'll probably feel the same way about Moore - who also tries to tell a story he's gotten wind of and researched as well as he can, as opposed to simply reporting off the AP or what have you. Regardless, a crackpot, he is not.

Here's a complaint about him that's legitimate. People complain that he doesn't use much footage of people who contradict his viewpoints in the pieces he makes. I think that's probably true. On the other hand, would you let a Satan worshiper deliver next Sunday's sermon for you? Of course not. I mean, even if the Satan worshiper seems like a nice person and all; to you (and me, of course) he's got it wrong, so what's the point?

In fact, you probably wouldn't even want one of us humanist types delivering up our "Jesus was a fine guy, but no more the Son of God than any of the rest of us..." messages from your pulpit. Or at least you wouldn't want it on a regular basis. Why? Cuz it's YOUR pulpit! That's why. Know what I mean?

Okay, so maybe this example doesn't play very well... Just watch the movie. You'll enjoy it, if nothing else, and it will make you think.

What did you do for your birthday? You out of town?

As always, a thoughtful and challenging reply.

You have a rosier understanding of your fellow humanity than I. I feel that a large segment do not consider doing what is right to be a highest priority. For most, including myself, the ongoing struggle is not to know the right thing to do, but to engage myself in doing it. Right is not easy. Right often does not feel good. Right many times does not provide a tangible benefit.

So, I feel this is an issue of personal integrity. Does one possess an inward moral compass that brings him to do what is most dofficult- the right thing?

Now, I do believe the ultimate and proper choice for all of humanity is to enter into a love-relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I believe all persons will find an adequate relationship with God only through Christ. But I will not automatically ascribe another person to Hell. God is highly mysterious to me. If He chooses to bring salvation to others, no matter my personal insight into their spiritual conditions, then that is His right as God. It's just my understanding that, if such does happen, it will still be through Jesus Christ.
