Need $200,000? Look In The Dumpster.
A Little Quip I Find To Be Humorous…
"Inside some of us is a thin person struggling to get out, but she can usually be sedated with a few pieces of chocolate cake." --------------------
And, The Moral Of The Story Is…
Craig Randall drove his garbage truck to Wendy’s restaurant to pick up their trash and drove away $200,000 richer. The previous week, he rummaged through the garbage and pulled a contest sticker off a cup. That time he won a free chicken sandwich. This time he found a cup and figured, “Hey, I’d like to get some free fries.” When he pulled the sticker off, it read: “Congratulations!&n bsp; You have won $200,000.” Someone who had eaten in the restaurant hadn’t taken the time to pull off the sticker before throwing it away. – www.kentcrockett.com
I’m interested. How do you think I can best use this little story as an illustration in a sermon or lesson?

Hmmm, I don't know how evangelical your church is, so this may not work.
As a sermon, you could talk about the free gift of salvation. Someone held a contest ticket that would give them $200,000. It was all theirs. All they had to do was say, "Sure, I want it." But it was trash to them. They threw it away and considered it worthless. Another person went looking for it, considered such a small thing to have value, expected a small reward, and was rewarded with an enormous treasure. Punctuate it by starting your sermon by holding up a dollar bill and telling the congregation to take it. Comment on how many people sat in their seats because they were wondering what the catch is.

For awhile now, I've been of the opinion there's a PastorSurrogate inside of you, yearning to come out. So look within, and ask him how he would use this very illustration to proclaim his message. You realize, this could likely be a transforming exercise for you?

I like it. I think you have grasped the clear implication, that we can easily throw away something that is quite valuable. Laziness, carelessness, thoughtlessness- then it is gone. I had little idea you had such religious understanding. Thanks.

Ha! Honestly, me too. The spiritual I can handle. The religious, I rebel against. There's a long, dull story in there, but I'll leave it for some other day. :)

If he's in there, he's not knocking on anything I can feel begging to come out. You know me... and NO offense to you whatsoever, I'd like to see less preaching and more...exampling.
And I'm even a lousy exampler...
(See that? -two non-existant forms of a word in single comment. Is that purely pathetic or brazenly brilliant?
Oh. Damn.
Figures.

I have a little story you might enjoy using. I talk to my students often about taking control of their lives. How if you lose a dollar then you feel cheated but if you give someone a dollar who needs it then you feel proud. I told them that when I am feeling low I take a few quarters and drop them around the school, knowing that kids will find them and be excited throughout the day...about a month later when I looking around my desk for a paper clip, I looked in a little pencil ar. Inside I found it was filled with quarters!!! I don't know if it was one student or many...but I went after school to the donut shop and has the best coffee of my life....the rest of the quarters I spread out around the school....he next day I told the story to each class....good vibes all around!

I like it! A wise man has said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." I'll pass your story along. Thanks!
