Visitor In The Night
I was settled in for the evening, around 9 p.m., when the phone rang. It was my daughter K and she was quite upset. She was speaking so quickly and fearfully that her story was hard to discern, so I had to ask her to slow down a bit. She had put Skylar, my one-year-old grandaughter to bed. And she was in the shower when she heard the sound. No one else was supposed to be in the apartment, but she heard sounds coming from the living room. Several of the baby's toys had been left in the floor, and as K was in the bathroom, she could clearly hear one of them squeeking. It sounded as if someone had stepped upon the toy. She was petrified, and I was trying to calm her. Is it not possible that the battery is going dead in one of the toys? Such sometimes causes a toy to kick on-and-off randomly. And even as I was trying to explain, she let out a scream- "Oh no. A different toy is ringing...a toy phone!" I had to agree that such was strange. "Call 911 right away" I urged. Then the phone went dead.
My wife and I jumped into the car and drove the five minutes over to her apartment. When we arrived, there were already three police cars in the parking lot, with lights blaring. We rushed to the door, to find K and Skylar all right. The officers had checked the house thoroughly. No one was inside, and there were no signs of forced entry. I looked around at the various toys scattered across the living room floor, and surmised that indeed some of them were ready for new batteries. It seems it was a false alarm.
I walked to the door with the officer. He was friendly, and quite talkative. I thanked him for such prompt service. And, before he left, he hesitated, and then spoke. "I answered a call to this very same apartment, about a year ago."
"What happened?" I asked.
"It was tragic. A little boy died. We tried to resuscitate him, but it was too late.... Interesting... he was playing with his toys in that very same floor..."

I almostread through the post and was thinking that 'Poor Pastor was April fooled by his daughter K'. But it seems to be a different story altogether. By the way is no one staying with K and Sylar in that aptmt.

Kids these days have lots of toys, especially when grandparents contribute. Many of our toys, and almost all of the books, come from thrift stores.

Just a reminder that my K, even though she lives on her own and has a baby, is still a little girl who gets scared easily. I'm glad to be there for her. She lives in a first floor apartment, which is probably easily accessible for a burglar. She has an alarm, but it is not activated. It can be scary to be home alone, even for myself sometimes. Well, I do have my ferocious dog- Bailey the pomeranian/fox terrier- to protect me.

She knows she got scared and panicked. No need to discuss it with her. I'm glad she came to me for help- that's what dad are for, you know.

It seems I remember that you have a vivid belief in the supernatural. Zombies, or vampires, I recall?

EEK! I would have probably reacted the same way K did, I'm glad you and the Mrs. are so close, that should make her feel a little more secure :)

Just a vivid imagination of someone who is still a little girl. In a way, it is comforting to know she is still growing up, and still needs dad.
