Those Pesky Little Creatures Of God

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Here they have built a nest, and babies are chattering like crazy, in the corner of the front veranda of our church sanctuary. They have made a big mess and continue to make a lot of noise. So, what to do….what to do…. A high pressure sprayer would certainly do the trick. And, we’ve one available. Would anyone protest? Our cat, Scooter, has proven in the past to be quite effective with the elimination of birds. He would bring them to the door for show, and then torture them to death, or at least until my wife could stand it no longer and put an end to the ordeal. But Scooter is now old and fat, mostly interested in food and sleep, like some people I know. But with a little help from a step ladder and a friendly master, perhaps his carnal instincts could be revived. Would anyone protest?

I suspect the bird family is safe, having chosen a good place to settle and raise the kids.

The secretary has a bullfrog problem.  (actual bullfrog here)Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Often she speaks with energy concerning her pond in the backyard. It has been lovingly built and tended, the home of pretty flowers and fish. But now all but two of the wriggly little creatures are gone, down the gullet of a big bullfrog. And the fellow makes a lot of noise at night, disturbing the tranquility and perhaps the work production of our church employee. What to do…what to do… She and her husband intend to catch and transfer his residence to the community lake. But so far he has escaped all efforts. Now I remember how to catch frogs. I learned the art as a kid. You have to do it at night. You arm yourself with a flashlight and a pole with fork tightly tied to the end. And I guess the reader can surmise the rest of the story. It works. But I don’t think she is interested in personally employing the procedure. Too bad; I like frog legs. Would anyone protest?

It is springtime around here. Birds are singing and frogs are croaking, and sometimes when the traffic dies down you can actually hear them. It’s time for our annual visit of The Big Black Snake.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket(not the actual snake)

He crawls across the front yard and disappears somewhere around the garage. I’m pretty sure one time he crawled into the storage building. It is dark in there, and there are probably lots of mice and things to satisfy a hungry snake. So really he is helping with pest elimination. I tell my wife he is just a harmless black snake, four feet long and as big around as my arm. Would anyone protest?

She never enters the storage building. It’s a good place to keep my pressure sprayer, and frog gig, and to hang out when a little privacy is needed. Just me and the snake.

Put the birds in the storage building, the cat in the pond, the frog in the nest, and the snake in the house. Then, EVERYONE will protest, but they will be very grateful, and very quiet about it when everything is restored to its proper order. :D

The other day I took my dog Misty for a walk through the field. She was sniffing along the ground when all of the sudden, she pulled up her head, turned back toward me and started running with a snake in her mouth!!!
I yelled for her to sit and thank goodness she did. I soon realized the snake was dead, it looked like I had run over it with the mower. I'm not even really afraid of snakes but, I don't want running at me...it's not natural :)

As for the bullfrog problem, I can loan your church secretary my dog Tater Tot. When she's not busy sleeping and figuring out ways to get out of the yard, she's at the banks of my pond stalking bullfrogs. She's caught five so far this year (but never seems to get all of the noisy buggers.)

The only GOOD snake is a dead snake.

I agree with intricategirl, the cat must go in the pond.

hmmm. the birds will leave as soon as the chicks are fledged, and you won't have the problem until next spring. the snake appears to be harmless, except for the fear factor, and he IS eating all sorts of nasty things that your wife CANNOT see and would NOT WANT to see, and would be much more startled by than an easily seen snake.

advise the secretary to buy a loud fountain and put a light in the pond, and a water aerator. frogs don't like them, and they do not like light either. if she leaves the underwater light on in the pond and a few spot lights around the pond, the frog should seek more amenable digs.

good luck and happy spring !!

One of the most fun posts I've read in ages.

Seems like Intricate girl is on her way to writing a children's song there.

As surrogate has suggested, your words would make a good song. Or, a children's nursery rhyme. La la la ---Bird in building, frog in the nest, snake in the house, cat in the pond.... and the cheese stands alone--- la la la. Kind of catchy, I think.

Yeah, you're afraid of snakes. Unless you're attacking one of the poor creatures with a mower. Growing up, the folks around had the opinion that any snake sighted must be killed- right away, with any means at your disposal. I saw my dad and mom kill several. The creatures weren't really being harmful- just being snakes. Then, next thing you knew, they were being beaten to death with the nearest stick. I made a mental note somewhere along the way to grow up and try to spare the poor reptiles such an unnecessary death penalty. Just leave 'em be. Snakes have a bad rap, thanks to the book of Genesis.

Tater Tot, the frog killing dog. Wow but I'd say you have a highly disturbed animal on your hands. And you are quite right about the cat. Deep under water is a good place for a cat to be. We have a cat I highly dislike. And he just won't die. We've had him for over ten years. His daily regimen is to eat, sleep, and puke on the carpet. And kill a bird, sometimes.

Wow! I think songwriter is the only job I've never held. lol I might just have to give it a couple of catchy verses now. :D

I don't mind snakes. In fact, I kind of like them. They are interesting little creatures. But my husband hits one accidently with the lawn mower just about every weekend. Furthermore, it's the time of year when they get... um... twitterpated. lol Now THAT is an interesting sight. lol

I'm going to make a guess about you. Haven't met you, and haven't really studied your blog. But I kinda think you are some punk going around trying to agitate people- especially religious people- by pretending to be knowledgeable and committed to a religion you most likely know little about. Just for the record, and not that you'll be considerate and thoughtful about the matter, we here on t-blog pride ourselves with showing respect when we go onto another person's blog. We don't have to agree, and we can even challenge, be we don't intentionally try to offend. At least the ones who want to be part of a decent community do not. I'll be glad to discuss the validity of my faith and belief in God. But not just because you have come along and tried to provoke.

The birds- yes, just leave alone. It'll be nice to see their progress every Sunday. Now, the frog has got to go. He will continue to eat the fish, and as I understand it they are expensive fish. Although I've suggested the use of a gig, my secretary intends to use a net. If that does not work, I'll loan her my snake. He'll eat the frog and the fish. And the snake, I'm not going to bother him. However one day I'll move, and as I unpack he will most likely be bedding in one of the boxes. It won't be a pretty sight when that happens.

My son owned a ball python for about a year. His menu consisted of three live mice, every two weeks. My son soon tired of caring for the creature, and so I fed him most of the time. Finally, the wife insisted we get rid of him, so I gave him to the local pet store. But he was a good snake. Very docile, easy to handle and pass along, as long as he was not hungry. So I like snakes.

to PastorDave and surrogate ~ two wisened old t-bloggers ~ hehehe

~ I love to read your blogs and the commmets you make to each other ~ keep it up ~ you make my day!

The next thing would be if your wife would ask for donations to see the two of you play pool ~ seems to me I heard surrogate make reference to PD's 'fancy engraved pool cue' ~ or something along those lines.
~ Yes, got a plan!
~ Aunt.coni makes note to contact Mrs PD about just such an event ~ we could have a chicken bbq ~ I'll make potato salad and the iced tea (sweetened like they make it in the south)

The church could benefit nicely .........

I have the bird nests in front of the store too PD and as soon as the little bird start learing to fly they occasionally fly into the store, very cute. Only thing not cute is the lizards almost as big as a small snake that absolutely shows no fear, but I am afraid of them. Spring is in the air.

I have a bird's nest above my porch light, in the corner by my enclosed porch (had one there last year also) ~ one week ago there weren't any signs of a nest being built/planned ~ when I returned there is the nicest, strongest nest E.V.E.R. with eggs in it already ~ so now 'we' wait for the baby birds to hatch and leave the nest ~ just like last year ~ and my grandchildren will like to hear the birds 'talking' as they say ~ I think it is nice!

Now snakes ~ ugh ~ that is an entirely different story! ~ *shudder*

One day, while I was managing a local store, during "birdie" season the awnings covering the walkway and enterance had become infested with little chirpping hatchlings. On of my dear patrons was approaching the enterance and all of a sudden "PLOP"!!! The birds gave her a "not so nice gift" right on her forhead.
Just imagine that happening to you chucher goers on a nice Sun. morning. PLOP right on their heads.
"What to do?" I took the lady to the restroom, showed her where to find towels and soap. Bless her, she remained a loyal customer.

This is kind of in respose to the reply by cuz ~

While living in the city in Detroit several years ago ~ when I was a youngster we walked a couple of lovely, long, tree-lined blocks to church ~ as my brother and I were heading to church a birdie 'dropped a gift' on my new coat ~ I didn't notice it myself, but my brother saw it and brought it to my attention ~ now, I could have returned home saying that "I can't go to church like this!" ~ instead I removed the coat and turned it inside out, then said to my brother, "glad that didn't land on my head." He remarked, "glad it landed on you and not me!" We laughed and went on our way ...!

The birds have found themselves a wonderful place very near to the presence of God. I would like this creature to be left unharmed. Unless there is a population issue their net should be untouched.

As for frogs and snakes they should be thrown out of the human habitat. But what are you doing about this sir??

Thanks for the kind words.

My wife is not a fan of the great sport of pool/billiards. Oh she pretended to like it back when we were dating. We would play pool several times per week. But we got married. Next thing you know, she was throwing away my old and comfortable clothes. Next my old lounge chair that I absolutely loved. And then, no more pool. She hid my rhinestone embossed cue stick. I bought another, and have been playing without her ever since. You women- so sweet, and then you marry and turn on us. Right?

Big lizards. We have a version of the chameleon around here. And they bite. And, when you grab them, their tails break off and they escape. I'm not sure their scientific name, but my dog likes to eat their tails.

If I had the option to choose the recipient from the bird, I would really like to have it happen. I could choose a different one every week, according to whom has given me a hard time. That would be fun. God ain't gonna let it happen, though.

Sorry about all the seperate replies, but I keep reading your comments and having additional thoughts. Not necessarily keen or worthwhile insights; just thoughts. I lived in the Detroit area for about five years. And, Detroit has a particular reputation with most people. What they don't know, including many who live nearby, is that there are some nice areas with tree-lined streets and pretty neighborhoods. Thanks for the reminder.

May I ask where you lived in the Detroit area, and how long ago?
I grew up in the northwest area of Detroit,(60's ~ yes, I'm old) which was very nice at the time, but not the same today.
The folks moved to Dearborn in '72. We are selling the home in Dearborn (since mom's death in Jan.); a sister lives in Dearborn Heights, another sister lives in Redford, a brother lives in Belleville.
I married and moved to the west side of Michigan 30 years ago, but return to the 'Detroit area' often. And yes, Detroit does have a bad rap, but ALL big cities have bad and good areas. People are often too quick to make opinions ~ sometimes w/o knowing anything about a place.
Sorry for running on here, but, oh well....!
((hugs)) to you and family
