Abdullah The Butcher's House Of Ribs And Chinese Food

He’s Abdullah The Butcher, “The Mad Man From Sudan”, a terrifying professional wrestler that I’ve enjoyed watching ply his trade through the years.  And, yes I am a closet redneck and a professional wrestling fan.  How dare you claim that it is fake!  I’ve been to a few live matches, although it has been many years.  Long before Vince McMahon glitterized, glamorized, and otherwise ruined the sweaty sport by promoting it as just a “show”, I loved to watch Abdullah and his cohorts bash one another in the big ring.  It was always promoted and developed as a battle of good and evil, with the morality lines clearly drawn.  Unlike modern day so-called wrestling, one did not have to wonder who was the bad guy.  Tojo Yamamoto bashed the nice guy over the head with his cane, knocking him senseless as he pinned him for the three-count.  The Iron Sheik used his patented “lightning flash” to blind his hapless opponents.  There were other varied weapons: heart punch, lariat, pole-axe.  Thus, for some reason, I gained an affinity for the bad guys of wrestling.  Even today, many years removed from my youthful love of the sport, I can name but few of the good guys.  It was wrestlers like Abdullah The Butcher that caught the imagination, and drew the fans into the arenas and mesmerized wide-eyed pre-teens into being glued to the television sets.

Abdullah The Butcher was the ultimate bad guy.  He was big; over 300 pounds, and obviously all was not muscle.  Supposedly he was from Sudan, a moron unable even to speak.  He was wide-eyed, with thick scars furrowing the length of his bald head.  Invariably he was matched against some pasty and unknown white guy.  As soon as the bell would ring, the savagery would begin.  Usually he would immediately catch the opponent unaware with a fierce karate chop, leaving him writhing on his back.  Then Abdullah would spring from the ropes, flying the mass of his huge body full force onto the semi-conscious man.  He would do so repeatedly, until finally the referee would signal an end to the match, no doubt saving the little remaining life of the poor victim.  Against more quality opponents, Abdullah would engage in a protracted fight, and blood would start flowing.  In wrestling lingo it is known as “cutting”, where he would secretly nick his forehead to make it bleed.  Please don’t be squeamish- it was all just good, wholesome entertainment.  Like I said, I just loved Abdullah!

That was many years ago.  The guy must be 70 years old by now.  In a moment of reflection and boredom, just for the sake of curiosity, I did a search on Wikipedia for Abdullah The Butcher.  Lo and behold, there were several pages of information.  He is from Canada, real name Larry Shreve.  He is elderly, and apparently still sometimes wrestles.  And of greatest interest to me, owns a restaurant in the Atlanta area.  Abdullah the Butcher’s House Of Ribs And Chinese Food!  Can you imagine the ambiance of such a place?  From what I gather, Abdullah himself sometimes cooks the food, and often hangs out for chitchat with his guests.  He is reported to be soft-spoken, intelligent, and willing to pose for photos.  Sounds like a place to which I absolutely must go.

There is a group of senior adults at my church who are always willing to take a trip and enjoy a meal.  They are retired and active and just like to go places.  They’ve been asking me to please come up with a place to go.  So, next Thursday, off we go to the aforementioned fine dining establishment.  It should be fun.  If I can get Larry to hold me in a headlock, I’ll post the picture in this blog.

That is, if I survive the ribs and the beating.  Want to join me?

The chairs look like they would be comfortable.
I hate restaurants where the seats are so hard ~ maybe that is to discourage people from staying too long ~ that is a shame in my opinion.

I would not have a problem eating here ~ think of me as you have lunch with your church people ~ enjoy!

I was going to say "I bet Abdullah the Sheik" was from Michigan or something. I grew up thinking Ivan and Nikita "The Russian Nightmare" Koloff were actually a pair of EVIL Communists. One guy was from Canada, the other was from Michigan. Likewise, Kamala the "Ugandan Giant" was from Coldwater, Mississippi.

I used to love wrestling when I was a kid, we had Mid South Wrestling down here, part of the NWA, which meant I got to pull for the Rock 'N Roll Express, JYD, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and hate guys like The Midnight Express, The Million-Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, The Fabulous Freebirds, and that damn tennis racket-wielding SOB Jim Cornette.

The funny thing is, as a kid, you HATE these guys, you despise them and are convinced they are the embodiment of evil, the you find it its just some guy from Mississippi trying to make his way, and most of them are decent guys.

I too enjoyed wrestling prior to the WWF and attended a few cards when they came to town. It was just The Sheik who used the flash fire to the eyes, not The Iron Sheik, who surfaced later. I also remember seeing guys like Andre The Giant, Bobo Brazil, George the Animal Steele and Pampero Firpo. I've totally lost interest in what wrestling has since become.

George the Animal Steel (I have no idea if that's how he spelled his name) was the football Coach at the high-school one city over when my uncle went there. I guess back then wrestling was a side-job for him, and from what my uncle said he didn't go full time till he had many years in as a teacher. Go figure.

And what's with you preachers digging wrestling? Man, when I was a kid, my Grandpa LOVED to watch it. He'd laugh so hard I thought he was going to keel over. The local show for Detroit then was actially based across the river in Windsor. Grandpa loved Lord Layton who became the announcer in later years. he took me to see it love a time or two. remember seeing "The Sheik".

Wow... wikipedia says "the Sheik" OWNED the Big time wrestling franchise... amazing.

I do remember all of those characters. Recently, a piece of mail came across my desk promoting "The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase" as an evangelist. Apparently he is a full-time traveling minister of the gospel. I'm not ready to be a supporter of his ministry, but I bet what he would have to say would be interesting. Now, if Kamala came out and gave a conversion testimony, I'd have to say a hearty "Amen"!

The trip has been postponed. Not cancelled, just postponed. I'm a bit irritated that some of our strongest and most longstanding church members has a greater interest in going to eat at a restaurant than spending time in prayer for their nation. It seems to me we've got our priorities mixed up. So, I'm not much in the mood to drive the church van to this excursion, at this time. Give me a few days to cool down! I'm sure Abdullah can wait.

Thank you for the correction about The Sheik. Indeed he was a different character than the Iron Sheik. As I remember, the Sheik smelled very badly, and used his pungency as a weapon in the ring. And his mysterious fire would blind his opponent, enabling him to gain easy victory. I wondered how he could be so effective, since he was so slightly built. But, if you stink and make use of fire, I guess you can be an effective wrestler.

Vince McMahon would not stand a chance against either the Sheik or the Iron Sheik.

I remember George The Animal. He was very hairy, and it looked to me like the fur was not glued on. I would think it would be difficult for students to respect a teacher who is also a hairy/imbecilic wrestler. I would be interesting to be one of his students. But, better to be his student than his ring opponent, I suspect.

I would have liked your grandfather. Would he have tolerated well an ernest conservative?

I remember The Sheik being a master of pulling foreign objects out of his trunks to gouge an opponent once he'd managed to get the referee distracted. And yes, he looked unkempt, so I imagine he smelled. He also had a submission hold called the camel clutch. I don't think you want to associate with guys who clutch camels.

No. NOOO! Say it is not so. How in the world could you say such a thing? Fixed? Fake? Even at 70 years of age, I believe Abdullah could pull a foreign object from somewhere hidden and give you some pain, bigtime. Then he would, in rapid successeion, floor you with a karate chop and hammer you with a big elbow smash. Nothing fake about that!

Abdullah is now retired.

When I was a kid, we could get three channels on television. On channel provided wrestling from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Abdullah The Butcher was a main attraction. I was a little pre-teen, and loved to be scared by his persona. He was mean, and tough, and indeed brough foreign objects into the ring. The referee would be distracted by something from the audience, or inadvertantly knocked cold by a misplaced dropkick. So it was not the ref's fault. Such things happen. Abdullah was a "bad guy" who I loved to wish would get beaten by someone, somehow. I remember those days, although they were 35 years ago. Abdullah was a great entertainer. I'd love to meet him.

You are lowering yourself to the judging of others through stereotypes, something I've worked hard in life not to do. Some in America may behave as robots, and some in America mistreat their elderly in Nursing Homes. Not most. I know there are unfair judgments and opinions about the people of India.

This is the time of year when those who are Christians celebrate the birth of Christ, which most of us believe is the stellar event of human history- God became flesh. We believe it to be God's great statement of His love for humanity. A little baby, so vulnerable and so needful of human connection- what a statement of God's heart toward us. And it is so antithetical of all that you mention to be wrong with the human condition. At the heart of anyone claiming to be committed to service to God, I think, should be love. After all, at the heart of God is love, according to the Christmas story. True religion is best manifested with love for fellow man. And I'm refering to a love that has practical expression- feed the poor, clothe the naked, defend the vulnerable, enable others to have lives of dignity. Any religion that is not interested in such is an evil religion, I think.

We live in a broken and sinful world. Exploitation and evil are byproducts. It is indeed sad that religion tends to complicate and further the problem, instead of bringing us closer to a solution. I encourage you to continue to ask these questions, but do not allow yourself to become embittered or militant in your response. Still I believe God's love is the answer. And we are the vehicles to bring that about.

you are in USA can ask these things but countries in
subcontinent(India,Pakistan,Bangladash)are very natorious about minorities rights most of them in those countries claim God would happy if you kill other religion fellow tell me is it fair to hate someone just because of his religion.
like you other religion fellows like Hindu Muslim Seikh claim their religion founder is most close to God and every one think their religion is true and all other will go to hell.
No one can prove who is right all talk about past after all these negative things then why religion at all why not just humanity which does not claim but simply proves its beauty all human take humanity same way unlike religion.

if God is so powerful like love why he allows evil to exist in his world

If you choose to be a humanist, and to leave God out of the equation, then in my understanding of human freedom you have that right. Of course, if you are wrong, you will face the consequences.

Prove my religion? Sorry. It is based upon faith, not reason. With the heart you trust a loving God, and live your life accordingly. Don't fool yourself into thinking you are too smart for God, or that you understand God completely. He is higher than you. Somewhere along the way, you must take the leap of faith.

Yeah, religion has messed up. But what I propose is not religion, but relationship. Not earning your way to God by good deeds, but a relationship with God based upon faith and love. Not all religions are the same. This is superior to a works-based religion.

Like I said to you many weeks ago, the Christmas story, of Jesus coming into our world in the manger of Bethlehem, is a wonderful statement to all humanity of what God's love is all about. Instead of being so quick to argue with the idea, why not consider it?

thank you very much for reply i know that was though question for religious person i must give credit to you for reply but what you ment by " you will face the consequences".
would you please define word faith
I do mention name of two religious person osama and hitler both of them killed lots of people just because they were thinking its part of their faith so some one can take faith that way.
again no proper definition of faith any way i can not think like you and you can not think like me and humanity will suffer at cost of religion for long at the end i must say
Merry Christmiss to all
just for humanity

And what size of nail do you think they used to crucify his son, Jesus Christ. Do you think it could have been as large as nine inches?
