Charlie Wilson's War

The namesake is a booze drinking, womanizing, liberal, marginalized Congressman from Texas whose greatest accomplishment had been to somehow continue to gain re-election to the House.  His conscience was pricked to the plight of the people of Afghanistan in their desperate struggle against the Soviets.  Wilson went about using his considerable connections and people-skills to covertly fund the resistance, which lead to the defeat of the Russians and eventually contributed to the end of the Cold War.

To me it is an interesting movie, largely because of an interest in politics and history.  Of course I understand, in this movie and in any interpretation of history, that at best the truth is only contained in the production.  It is not complete, pure, nor absolutely accurate.  It's a movie.  Hanks does a fine job, as always.  He comes across so nice, so real, that I have to like his character.  Julia Roberts not so much.  I've seen her perform quite well in other movies, and is capable of soliciting from the viewer the same type of connection as Hanks.  But, not in this movie.  To me, she just seems a bit too syrupy and simplistic in her attempt to disjointedly portray the beautiful adultress and fiery fundamentalist.  And, referencing the word "beauty", I'll make the obvious male sexist observation and just point out that Charlie Wilson surrounds himself with a bevy of beautiful women, Robert's character included.  Not that I noticed.

I read the critical review in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, which judged the movie a "C".  Apparently the reviewer thinks the respect for Congressman Wilson's efforts is misapplied.  He gives the personal opinion that support of the Mujahadeen fueled the Muslim fundamentalist takeover, which lead to the events of 9/11, and our current quandary in Iraq.  That's highly debatable.  And perhaps it could be the subject of another movie, maybe a sequal.  It could be called Bill Clinton's War, or the like.  The movie even made the point that our responsibility, after the defeat of the Soviets, was to invest in the rebuilding of the ravaged country.  Wilson is shown in tears because of the disinterest of his fellow politicians.  It's a fair point, worthy at least of consideration if not acceptance.

One can play the game and be quite successful and powerful.  Or, one can "seize the moment" by using the opportunities of life to make a difference.  I think this is the greatest message of Charlie Wilson's War.  I'll give it a "thumb's up".  Go see this movie.

You're too funny. Bill Clinton's war? I mean, really. Check the timetable.

The point I make is that I think it is an unfair stretch to blame 9/11 on the effective opposition of Communism of the Reagan administration. If one is going to insist upon this, then we can just as easily blame 9/11 upon the ineptitude of the Clinton administration.

Unfortunately, your argument doesn't hold water. I know you can't see it, but that's only because you've long chosen not to.

And, per the previews, Bucket List looks like a good film. Nicholson is always entertaining.

Can't stand her? Don't you think she is attractive, in an alien-from-outerspace kind of way?

So, what are you saying? Anybody, with any sense, would utilize logic and reason and accurate events of history to deduce that indeed Reagan and Conservative/Republican politics are the blame for 9/11? It's an interesting theory, but lacking in credibility. You, sir, seem to be the one with your head in the sand. Appeasement and cajoling and conversation, the usual tactics of the left to deal with murderous regimes, has proven throughout history to be disastrous. In matters of foreign policy, you should be quite thankful for the accomplishments of Ronald Reagan.

"In matters of foreign policy, you should be quite thankful for the accomplishments of Ronald Reagan."

Ohhhh, you mean the work started by Truman, and continued by Eisnehouer, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter that Reagan also worked on? I know you think the sun rises and fall with him and that his famous line "Tear down this wall," was the main reason communism collapsed - along with his clever ploy to make the Russians think we were actually going to have the Star Wars defense system - forcing them to further spend money on their own defense... blah blah blah...

As for the 9-11 blame? I blame the criminals who did the deed and their mastermind organization.

All I know is that after the first World Trade center bombing, we went after, captured and tried the responsible parties. Think we'll ever consider doing that this time? Nope. we don't want to capture them... It's too much fun having them out there to hate and to use to justify ANY foreign policy decisions this idiot you support so much makes.

A question I ask myself, as I consider what you have just written: "Am I as cynical toward the Democrats as you are with the Republicans?" And I do not like the answer. Is there a truly earnest, honest, virtuous politician on either side? Maybe Charlie Wilson's character has them all beat? Yeah, he had a lot of character flaws- but he was known in political circles as a man who kept his word.

Her hairstyle and, as you have pointed out, her signature mouth combine in the movie to give her an "ET-like appearance". Still, you can hide beauty only so much, and most men I think- no matter how old and married and pretentious- would have to admit that Julia is attractive.

And I don't think you need to worry about any physical abuse coming your way, from her lips to your neck, anytime soon.

I'm not cynical about REAL republicans. This neo-con bunch are NOT Republicans. I've voted for Republicans. I don't buy spreading peace through war. They do.
